FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Airport Patrol Officers Entitled to Equal Benefits Under New Law AB 86 (Nava) Signed into Law Assemblymember Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara) announced that his Assembly Bill 86 was signed into law yesterday. This bill will allow contract agencies to offer airport patrol officers the same retirement benefits available to similar officers around the state.
These officers risk their well-being for the safety of the public, said Nava. I am pleased they will finally be able to receive the equal retirement benefits that they deserve.
Airport patrol officers are responsible for the safety of the public while they are on airport property. In the wake of 9/11, the duties of airport patrol officers have become much more intense. They are the first responders to all emergency and non-emergency calls for law enforcement services in airports and they are required to carry firearms and other safety equipment. In addition, they meet or exceed POST training requirements.
Airport officers are classified as Peace Officers under the California Penal Code yet do not have equitable classification under sections of law that dictate their retirement benefits. This bill will give airport patrol officers the ability to attain equitable retirement formulas and industrial death and disability benefits.
