Copy and Paste

Note: you may print this tutorial by clicking file, then print.

Copy means to select and place text or images into your computer memory.

Paste means to place previously copied text or images into a current document, email, or text input box.

There are 2 basic methods of copy and paste: Using keyboard combinations or Edit Menu subcommands.

The keyboard method:

While holding down your left mouse button, drag your mouse over the sentence below from left to right (or right to left) until completely highlighted in black and then release left mouse button.

This is a sample sentence to be highlighted, copied, and pasted.

If the above sentence is highlighted: Hold down the Ctrl key (lower left) and press the C key. Executing a Ctrl C sequence places highlighted text into memory.

Now, click inside the Text Input Box below, hold down the Ctrl key and press the V key.

Text Input Box:

Executing a Ctrl V sequence will paste text at the current cursor location.

The Edit Menu Option:

If you look at the top left portion of your screen you will see Edit as a menu option. If you click Edit will see Copy and Paste as options within this menu. Clicking Copy or Paste has the same function as executing Ctrl C or Ctrl V keyboard sequences. You will also notice other functions within the Edit menu with associated keyboard combinations.

Some Final Comments:

The copy and paste functions are very handy for many tasks such as:

Moving an email address to an address book or To field of an email.

Fetching a portion of text from a web page and placing in a text file or email.

Creating emails in your word processor program off-line and then copying and pasting the text into an email while online.
